It feels so strange to be at home today, in the past we'd spend the August Bank Holiday weekend away at the beach, how I miss those carefree days of packing up the camper van at a moment's notice and disappearing with the boys for a few days

Caring for my parents is a full-time job these days and I have to be available 24/7, we have a fantastic live-in carer who I honestly couldn't manage without as I struggle to come to terms with the changes in my parents which has made them people I no longer recognise, but the biggest and most definitely strangest change is that my dad's life long chronic stammer has disappeared
Growing up I never noticed his stammer it was just my dad and who he was, it wasn't until I became an adult I realised just how much his stammer impacted his life and how vile some people could be towards him because of it, yet dad was always the most polite and kindest of people you're ever likely to meet
When his alzheimer's started to take hold and dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer I was shocked to discover that I really had to advocate hard for dad to ensure he was given ample opportunity to have his say on what he wanted to happen re his treatment and ask questions rather than me being expected to answer for him to save time
I'd give anything to hear that stammer again and know that my dad is still in there
