Welcome back to our Jackanory Stories series where you can catch up on the many parts of our life when we weren't blogging, you can search this series at any time just by using the word Jackanory, oddly they come up in a totally random order but they're all there, plus the odd unexpected post that we may have referred to our Jackanory Stories in
Today we travel right back to the beginning of Ekos life, to the very first time mum saw a photo of him at only 24 hours old and fell head over heels in love with him. Back then Eko's name was Wash as he was part of the Fireflies litter
Mum had booked Eko approx 18 months prior to his birth, she specifically wanted a Cocker puppy from parents that had passed all the relevant health testing and genetic testing for the breed, this was to ensure the good health of the puppy as much as is humanly possible by the breeder
Those of you that have followed us for many years may remember the shocking post of an email reply mum received from a self declared responsible breeder
Mum was searching for me at the time, she'd asked about health testing as she was concerned about the genetic problem of PRA which affects the retina and membranes in the back of the eye causing blindness
Badger Boo had PRA and started going blind at around 4 years old, it never held him back from doing anything, but his life could have been much fuller if he'd kept his eyesight well into old age
One evening in March 2018 Eko's breeder rang mum to say the puppies were on their way and we waited with bated breath to see what colour our new boy was going to be, at this point we didn't know if this was our puppy or the other male in the litter who was also a Gold, which we had recieved a photo of at the same time (not shown here)
Mum had really hoped for a Blue Roan like Badger Boo or a Black like me, with Eko's mum being a black there was a high chance of some black puppies, but nature decided otherwise and everypawdy in the litter was a beautiful Golden colour, but seriously what better colour for a little pup who was going to go on and change his daddies life big time
I was still working mums assistance dog way back then and Eko was supposed to be my successor, but Eko had other ideas and chose his own path to become dads Diabetic Alert Dog by starting to naturally alert to dads Diabetes aged approx 6-7 months old, so mum decided to run with it and see how it turned out as dad really needed some help managing his Diabetes
To be continued....
