New Week New Problem

My parents were so organised re sorting out their affairs and paperwork well in advance of the possibility of them ever needing some help with their financial and health decisions in later life in the form of Lasting Power of Attorneys

Admittedly I just stuck them in a drawer thinking I'd never need them but was glad it was all sorted, I then totally forgot all about them until recently

On Monday the DWP rang me asking for the code number on dad's LPA or if he didn't have one they'd appoint somebody on his behalf, I explained that there was an LPA registered but that I'd not had the time to look into it and would get back to him

Then the problems started!

I rang the Office of the Public Guardian which is the contact on the paperwork, after over an hour in a phone queue I'm informed it's not registered online as it was done pre 2016 and somebody would email me about what to do, which still hasn't happened as of this morning

I asked who the name was on their paperwork that held the originals as I didn't recognise it and I'm given the postal address for said company

I looked it up online only to discover the company went into compulsory liquidation in 2018 and the person in charge went to prison

There's so much information online about next steps if you've had dealings with this company, but it's all so very confusing and I've no idea where to start, especially as my parents house could potentially be involved I discovered

Mum has always dealt with everything legal for both her and dad, I've tried gently asking her about it but she can't remember, I don't want to upset her by pushing it and causing her unnecessary stress because of her Vascular Dementia. I'm also now really worried that my parents may have been victims of a scam with this company

Hopefully someone at the Citizens Advice Centre can help me sort it all out when I pop in there later today. I really don't need the stress of the DWP breathing down my neck on top of everything else going on

  1. Dang, that sounds like a real mess for something that should have been taken care of already.

    1. Luckily the Office of the Public Guardian have put dad's LPA online now, so I can direct anybody that needs to see it with a secure link, but we're still waiting for mum's to appear. At some point I'm going to have to pay for some certified copies in case they're needed to be seen in person by anybody, bilut yes the whole thing is a mess and a lot more complicated than it was ever meant to be, but at least they're not completely lost which I first feared xxx
