Well that didn't last long!

Tuesday was was such an amazing day with the fantastic news that Boris is healing well when we went for his 6 week post op check up at Lumbry Park

There are still some restrictions and Boris isn't allowed to go racing around with Eko just yet, but he is allowed to start going off lead for a few mins each day as we build up the length of time gradually week by week over the next six weeks, by which time Boris should be fully healed all being well

So on the way home from the specialist vets we stopped off at a local dog walking field so Boris could enjoy some long awaited freedom

Video Description - Boris the Black Cocker Spaniel enjoying some freedom off lead in a large open field

I fully expected him to gallop off and do some zoomies when I first let him off the lead, but no he did about two steps and stopped to sniff

I was both disappointed and relieved at the same time, but ultimately glad Boris didn't go too mad, he was soon enjoying himself trotting around and taking in all the smells at his own pace

It was such a relief to find out that Boris is now well on the road to recovery, at last things were finally going our way and working out for a change

Unfortunately that feeling didn't last for long

⚠️ Trigger Warning ⚠️
Talk of blood and wounds

A few hours later at around 2000hrs I noticed there was a small patch of blood in Eko's bed, I called him to me to check his paws and found nothing amiss, it was weird as it was only a small patch of blood so I wasn't overly concerned as I started checking the rest of Eko's body

As I ran my hand under Eko's chest I felt dampness and discovered the source of the blood, somehow Eko had torn a large hole in his chest whilst out on his walk with my partner earlier that evening

A partially blurred image of the somewhat graphic image Eko's wound, a long gash of approx 3" in his armpit that's very deep and goes through several layers of muscle, there's also a chunk of Eko's skin hanging down to one side

With my partners help I was able to get a decent photo of the wound to contact Vidivet for some out of hours veterinary advice, I wasn't sure if it needed stitches immediately at the emergency vets or if it would be ok to leave until the morning with some pain relief on board

Within a few minutes of my enquiry  we received lots of helpful advice from Dr Nick about the cleaning and dressing of the wound to keep Eko comfortable until our own vets opened in the morning

We took Eko in to the vets the next morning pre starved as I was fairly certain they'd need to keep him in and give him sedation to stitch him up, other wise Eko would need to wait at least another six hours before he could be sedated if he'd had his breakfast first

Eko's wound after it had been stitched up at the vets, I was surprised by how small it was once sewn up, there was also very little bruising

I really struggle every time I have to leave one of the boys at the vets and Eko's wound was so deep that it had me really worried how they'd be able to fix it

Eko was a little trooper though, he was a very good boy and happily greeted everyone we were told when we went to collect him later that day after his surgery

Thinking about it I don't think I've ever had a pet give me cause for concern when our vets office is actually open. It's always at night or at the weekend when you need to see the emergency vet, which can work out quite expensive, depending on the time and what needs doing

I find the Vidivet app is an extremely useful tool in our First Aid kit as I have a qualified vet at my finger tips 24/7 for anything I'm unsure about. All our friends and followers can use our discount code BORIS25 for 25% off the first years subscription with Vidivet

Here's hoping this week holds no more surprises
I'm currently drowning in paperwork to do with my parents after dads GP made several referrals when we last went to see them

I get several phone calls a day from various organisations and I'm finding the whole process totally
overwhelming as I never seem to get a minutes peace, maybe it's because I'm not feeling too great myself at the moment, for now I'm just digging my head in the sand about filling it all in

Dad and I did manage to squeeze in a visit to the Hunter Centre for him to meet all the staff and he's now willing to give it a try one day a week to start with, which I'm sure will do him the power of good being around people again
